It Can't All Be Bagpipes

Here are the three songs that soundtracked my first week in Edinburgh. You know when you listen to a song or album you haven't heard in a while and it evokes a bunch of memories and images from the time you really experienced it? I think that'll happen with these ones.

The Luyas—Too Beautiful to Work

Their sophomore album doesn't come out until the end of February, so a live version will have to suffice for now. Twisty time signatures that manage to be incredibly groovy. Montrealers, CD release show at Sala on February 24. Just sayin'.

Maps & Atlases—Israeli Caves

The harmonies and back-up vocals really make this song, plus, I'm still picking out new things even after more than 15 listens (I'm pretty sure those are chimes at 2:46). Lots to discover and lots to like.

Diamond Rings—On Our Own

He's going to have a good 2011. Sylvie Smith of Evening Hymns and the Magic sings the harmony.
